Utilized are romantic notions of the mountain, and the accumulation of matter, as cooperative ingredients. The scenes are photographed in areas of the Mojave Desert frequented by car, truck, motorcycle, and recreational vehicle, and are made from two to four hour-long exposures with an 8x10 inch view camera. Each exposure records the accretion of moonlight, and the accumulation of light cast from the headlamps of dozens to hundreds passing automobiles, each momentarily painting particular hillsides and facades with strokes of light. The abstracted band of light in the images might be mistaken for the amber glow of the setting sun, a light leak on the film, or otherwise a conceivably supernatural cause, but are in fact a direct conversation between the land and the vehicles that navigate through it. All images are made in and around a specific thoroughfare built for the now waning metallurgical industry in the area, initially connecting both sides of the Mojave, in service of goods and materials transported to and from Los Angeles. The road now remains as a regional artery for educational, recreational, and touristic industries. These pictures have been made at various plots that had been left in a state of stagnation; either defunded in recent years, fallen to vacancy, or just put on hold in the months after the economic collapse of 2008 and 2009. At each site, attention is paid to the grading (mounds of earth and gravel generated from the overall leveling of the location) and recorded with a 4x5" view camera. The individual character of each mound, initially built through mechanical processes, and subsequently influenced and rebuilt over time with weather and erosion, becomes a point of observation and of reverence. These historic and groundbreaking bodies of photographic work produced in the mid 19th Century were weaponized and utilized in Washington for funding the simultaneous expansion of industry and protection from industry, marking the eventual disappearance of the land that these works so eloquently described. Conversely, such works were also used in inspiring the construction of our National Parks system and the preservation of particular landmarks as cultural monuments. I wanted to make a work that was both about light and the absence of light, perception and embodiment, representation and invisibility. Black Mountain Detachment: Two Nights, From Waxing to Fully Stated (2008) reinterprets a hanging wall on Black Mountain Range in California. Over a period of two nights, my camera remained fixed in position, recording a portion of the mountain and its adjacent valley floor, as the moon rises from behind the ridge, it illuminates the valley floor, while obscuring, erasing the façade, leaving the mountain in darkness. The lens was opened for the three and a half hours that it took the waxing moon to cross the summit, and then closed before the escarpment was brushed with moonlight. The process was repeated again on the following night, in full moonlight on the same sheet of film. This gesture walks a line between illumination and absence, resisting the notion that a photograph marks a moment in time. The photograph is housed in an artist-made, trapezoidal frame. The top horizontal is larger than the bottom horizontal. Similar to the slope of hanging walls that make up the now erased mountains façade, this picture leans, supported by the wall where it is shown. The salty particulate consists of halite, trona, nickel, mirabilite, arsenic, and cadmium. In 1913, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power began the diversion of its arteries to feed its reservoir. Owens lowered for over ten years and held water until the mid 1920’s, altering the face of farmland in the valley. The region is known for high winds, making the dry lake the largest single source of dust pollution in the United States. Such is the cause for increased respiratory illnesses in the region. Mount Whitney, the highest summit in the contiguous United States is in frame, but disappeared by airborne particulate (PM). Upon returning to my various bases and camps following the late night exposures for Accumulations project, I would once again set up my camera in the vicinity and begin another two-hour exposure. During this time, I would meander and collect a variety of discarded objects - detritus, and other naturally and artificially manufactured forms that resided on the desert floor, illuminated by moonlight. In real time, I would then perform for the camera by improvising a variety of uncomplicated still lives without the aid of looking through the ground glass, imposing a variety of ungainly compositions. Certain objects have more or less presence, depending on what percentage of the exposures they were stationed in place. All of the things were then brought back to my hometown of Los Angeles, where they were donated, discarded, or else utilized accordingly. Cars and Trucks Among the Water Trails of the Ceriso, for example, is a time based meditation on found animal and automotive paths that have been forged in the direction of various water sources within certain remote areas of the Mojave Desert in California. This audiovisual assembly of vignettes serve as field that loosely follow Mary Hunter Austin’s central writings about arid California and its socioeconomic climates, meteorological parameters, and converging atmospheres. In this series of image and sound, the slow flow of water, the steady sounds of the open highway, and the pedestrian routes created by a spectrum of animal life in the region converge into an
